How Narcissists Rewrite History to Protect Their Ego

Let’s start off with the level of awareness that they don’t have which is self-reflection. It is unlikely that a narcissist could ever truly engage in self-reflection, since that would require them to be able to step outside of themselves and see their own behavior and motivations from an objective perspective. Underneath their grandiosity is a tiny little voice whispering in insecurity desperate for affirmation.

Now let’s get to the level of awareness that they have of their condition.

Narcissists know they are different from others. Narcissists are not at all lacking mental perception, or comprehension those are actually their strong points. They do know that there is something not quite right with them, but they simply don’t care. They truly can’t help the fact that they have this disorder. They can’t help who they are, and how they behave because of their personality disorder. Their ego doesn’t allow them to see that they have flaws because that makes them vulnerable, it makes them take a closer look within and they don’t want to look within because they’re afraid of what they might see. They may have some knowledge that they are deeply psychologically disturbed, but at the same time they feel superior and that they are better than others which outweighs the need to address the inner pathology.
