How to Deal with Narcissistic or Immoral Parents as a Christian
Children and Parents
6 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
We are not commanded to honor them unconditionally.
We are not commanded to honor them mindlessly.
We are not commanded to honor them for themselves.
We are not commanded to honor them through letting them degrade us.
We are not commanded to honor them and let them injure or harm us.
This is a highly conditional commandment.
We are commanded to honor them in the Lord (for the Lord).
This means that we are to honor them in truth, without injuring good, without injuring justice, and lastly, without injuring God’s perspective
God wants us to do this because He is going to be our ultimate parent, our Father in Heaven.
