Narcissist Tricks: Why Victims Believe They’ve Changed
Some people allow themselves to get caught into a narcissistic trap again, and again for several different reasons. Some don’t learn from past mistakes to the extent we might hope for.
- You can think of getting a speeding ticket for speeding, but you still speed over and over.
- You can think of the addict knowingly buying, and using drugs when continued use can result in a bad outcome especially considering the fentanyl-opioid crisis.
- You can think of a doctor telling you to diet and exercise to improve your health condition, and you choose not to take heed. Possibly, because you became comfortable with a bad diet, and an unhealthy lifestyle which made it difficult for you to initiate change.
You can think of these same analogies of why victims get caught into a narcissistic trap again, and again. I don’t believe victims purposely go back into the narcissistic trap repeatedly, because they enjoy doing so. Studies shows how some of our brain fail to learn from past experiences, and this can be true for a victim of narcissistic abuse. Victims also get caught into being hoovered, gaslighted, sympathizing, and empathizing with the narcissist that causes them to get caught back into the grips of the abusive cycle.
