The Difference Between Empathy and Sympathy in Narcissists

Some professionals are of the opinion that those who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder do, in fact, experience feelings of sympathy rather than empathy. Whenever narcissists have feelings of sympathy, it is possible that they are expressing their pity or sadness for the suffering of another individual, particularly someone who is close to them. The manner in which they feel pity, on the other hand, is deeply misguided; rather than striving to comprehend the agony of people who are suffering, they want to gain from those who are suffering. A person’s capacity to feel sad for another person is referred to as empathy. Therefore, despite the fact that narcissists may not be able to completely comprehend or empathize with the emotions of another individual, they are nevertheless capable of feeling pity for that other. In spite of this, a narcissist will still attempt to take advantage of someone who is suffering, especially if that person is someone they are close to. This is true even in the case that the situations described above occur.

The ability to comprehend and share the sentiments of another person is what we mean when we talk about empathy. Empathy is the capacity to experience what the other person is going through.
