The Narcissist’s Self-Esteem: A Leaking Bucket

The narcissist’s self-esteem is very unstable and drastically changes throughout the day.

They struggle greatly with the ability to self-regulate their self-esteem.

As a result of this, they are incapable of being sober, self-controlled, and having a focus on the truth.

An analogy that has been used to describe the narcissist’s self-esteem is that of a leaking bucket. Until it is completely empty, it will continually leak. Irrespective matter how much love you give them, it will never be enough.

When people reach a point when their self-esteem is too low, they will have to turn to something outside of themselves in order to reclaim it.

These external tactics are used by the narcissist in order to successfully manage their self-esteem.

The two primary instruments are

self-gratification and self-degradation

Exalting oneself naturally results in an increase in one’s self-esteem. All that is required is an audience.

Every degradation requires victims. It is possible to reclaim one’s self-esteem by denigrating another…
