What should you let go of today?
“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations.
We all walk the Earth believing that the cause of our stress, our worries, our anxiety or our depression are external events or other people.
Spoiler alert: It’s not what happens that causes you to be distressed, it’s your perception of it.
I know, there’s many things going on out there and it gets overwhelming and not easy to be alive sometimes, yeah, so taking responsibility for all that external noise is a lot to take in.
But there’s a very positive side of that realization, and that is the fact that if you are responsible and able to create uneasiness in your life by seeing things from a specific point of view, you have also the power to create inner peace for yourself by changing your perspective.
Think about it.
If you’re now worried about something that may or may not happen in the future, it’s not the thing itself that may or may not happen what’s making you anxious, it’s your expectation of what could happen or not happen and your fear that it may not be what you want.
